Ajax move to secure promising Congolese-Belgian talent Jorthy Mokio amid Barcelona interest

Ajax are in advanced talks with Belgian midfielder Jorthy Mokio, who is of Congolese descent, as the Dutch giants seek to extend the teenager’s contract and fend off growing interest from other top European clubs.

The 16-year-old, currently on a deal running until 2027, has made significant strides in his development at Ajax’s famed youth academy.

His progression has not gone unnoticed, prompting the Eredivisie club to initiate discussions aimed at tying him down for the long term.

Despite FIFA regulations restricting players under 18 from signing contracts exceeding three years in length, Ajax are exploring ways to secure Mokio’s future at the club with a proposed deal that would eventually run until 2030.

An official offer is expected to be tabled in the coming weeks as both parties continue negotiations.

Mokio’s rise through the Ajax ranks has been closely monitored, with the club reportedly keen to reward his performances and loyalty following his decision to part ways with the DR Congo national setup.

Although eligible to represent the Leopards, Mokio recently stepped away from international commitments with the Congolese team, a move seen by many as a sign of his intent to focus fully on his club career.

The youngster’s growing reputation has attracted attention beyond the Netherlands. Barcelona are believed to be among the clubs keeping a close eye on Mokio’s situation.

However, Ajax remain confident they can retain the highly-rated midfielder by presenting a clear pathway to the first team and offering an environment where young talent is consistently nurtured.

Mokio’s technical skill, maturity on the ball, and tactical intelligence have made him a standout figure among his peers.

His versatility in midfield and ability to read the game have drawn comparisons with some of Ajax’s most successful academy graduates, further underscoring his potential.

For Ajax, securing Mokio’s services would be a continuation of their long-standing philosophy of building around homegrown talent.

The club has a storied history of developing some of Europe’s finest footballers and is determined to ensure Mokio remains part of that legacy.

The negotiations come at a crucial juncture in Mokio’s career. With increased exposure and the weight of expectations growing, the next steps he takes will be critical.

Ajax are hoping that offering stability and a clear vision for his development will be enough to convince the youngster and his representatives to commit to the Amsterdam project.

While talks are ongoing and an official agreement has yet to be finalised, sources close to the situation indicate that both sides are optimistic.

If a deal is struck, Mokio could soon be celebrating a new chapter in his budding career—one that may see him transition from academy prospect to a central figure in Ajax’s future.
