Former Egyptian footballer Ahmed Hossam, known as Mido, has disclosed that he did not observe fasting during the month of Ramadan while playing football, stating that he obtained a permit to break his fast from Al-Azhar Al-Sharif.
In a television statement, Mido said, “I did not fast during Ramadan, and I have a permit from Al-Azhar Al-Sharif because football was my profession.”
The former Tottenham Hotspur player added, “It is difficult to play at a high level in the English Premier League while fasting, especially since Ramadan falls in the summer, and at that time, I was playing football matches.”
Mido concluded his remarks by recalling an incident involving his former teammate at Tottenham, Hossam Ghaly, stating, “I remember that Hossam Ghaly wanted to fast during a match against Liverpool during Ramadan but he couldn’t complete the match and was substituted at halftime.”
Ahmed Hossam Mido had various professional experiences in Europe, representing several clubs including Olympique Marseille in France, AS Roma in Italy, and West Ham United in England, before retiring from football in 2013.
