Ahmed Diab elected to lead African Leagues Union
Ahmed Diab, head of the Egyptian Professional Clubs Association, has been unanimously chosen as the first president of the African Leagues Union for a four-year term.
His election comes as the newly formed body begins to activate its role across the continent and formalize its structures.
This step marks the start of an organized phase for the union following the completion of its founding procedures. Under Diab’s leadership, the union aims to strengthen cooperation between domestic league bodies, helping them share expertise and build a unified vision for club competitions in Africa.
Key priorities include improving local league formats, raising the level of professionalism and boosting the economic and marketing profile of African football. The union also wants to expand the influence of national league organizations in running club tournaments, giving them a bigger say in scheduling, commercial rights and infrastructure standards.
The move reflects a growing awareness in recent years of the need to modernize football governance on the continent, with stakeholders increasingly focused on better organizational models and stronger financial foundations for the game in Africa.
