In an exclusive interview with Bakary Koné, Ivorian football legend, he shares insights on the upcoming AFCON 2024, his expectations for Ivory Coast, and the leading contenders for the continental title.

Bakary Koné, renowned as one of Ivory Coast’s football legends with an illustrious career in prominent European clubs such as Marseille and Nice, as well as representing his national team from 2003 to 2010, sits down for an interview with “Cairo 24.”

This marks the second episode in the series of African Legends, where Koné sheds light on the AFCON 2024 and various aspects of the game.

Here are the excerpts from the conversation:

On Hosting AFCON in Ivory Coast:
“I feel immense joy that my country Ivory Coast will host this edition of the African Cup of Nations.

We will astonish everyone with the organization, and I anticipate this edition to be the best in the history of the tournament.”

Expectations for Ivory Coast’s National Team:
“I am optimistic about this generation of Ivorian players.

With the strong support of the fans, we might see Ivory Coast in the final of this grand tournament.”

Message to the National Team Ahead of the Tournament:
“You play in your own country and in front of your people; this is a powerful incentive for everyone to give their best to bring joy to the nation and create a new history in African football.”

Contenders for the Title:
“I believe that Morocco, Ivory Coast, and Senegal are the favorites to clinch the continental title.

I also nominate Mali as the dark horse in the AFCON.”

African Players’ Excellence in Europe:
“Numerous African players in top European leagues, including Mohamed Salah and Victor Osimhen, signify the significant progress African football has made in recent years due to the abundance of players in major European clubs.”

Is Mohamed Salah the Best African Player in History?
“Mohamed Salah has had a magnificent journey with Liverpool, and undoubtedly, he is among the best African players in history.”

Reasons for Ivory Coast’s Recent Decline and Responsibility:
“Ivory Coast’s national team has been going through a challenging period in recent years.

The golden generation led by Drogba has ended, and new names need time to establish themselves.

I hope the AFCON will be the beginning of an upward trajectory for this new generation.”

Closing Thoughts on Ivory Coast’s Group in the Tournament:
“The group is exceptionally tough.

The current state of affairs in African football means that all matches are strong.

Being with Guinea-Bissau, Nigeria, and Equatorial Guinea makes this group the most challenging in the tournament.

I hope for the fans’ support to lead us to the top of this group.”

In this insightful interview, Bakary Koné shares a wealth of perspectives on Ivory Coast’s footballing future, the AFCON 2024, and the evolving landscape of African football.
