Nigeria’s football icon, Nwankwo Kanu, has unveiled the challenges he faced in securing playing time with Arsenal in the aftermath of the 2004 AFCON finals. The revered striker played a pivotal role for the Super Eagles as they reached the semi-finals in Tunisia, ultimately finishing third after a defeat to the hosts.
Upon returning to England following the AFCON campaign, Kanu encountered difficulties in reclaiming his spot in the Arsenal lineup during their historic unbeaten Premier League season (2003/04).
“It was difficult because in a team with so many good players, when you lose your place, it’s difficult to get it back.
Obviously, Arsenal did very well during my absence, so it was challenging for me to regain a spot in the team after I left,” Kanu disclosed in an interview with the club’s official website.
The legendary footballer acknowledged the strength of the Arsenal squad during that period, making competition for places intense.
Despite his struggles for regular starts, Kanu played a vital role in the team and was part of a historic season for Arsenal.
Kanu, a two-time CAF Footballer of the Year, remains an iconic figure in African football history.
His impact extended beyond Arsenal, having also played for Portsmouth and West Brom in the English Premier League.
Notably, he holds the record for the third most substitutions in the history of the Premier League, with 118 appearances coming off the bench.
