African football icons: Masters of both AFCON and Champions League glory
Distinguished group of players stands out for achieving the remarkable feat of winning both AFCON and the UEFA Champions League. The exclusive list, comprising only ten football legends, highlights the exceptional talent and contributions of these individuals to both their national teams and their European clubs.
Among these illustrious names are renowned figures such as Algerian legend Rabah Madjer, Ghana’s Abedi Pelé, Nigerians George Finidi and John Obi Mikel, Cameroonian Samuel Eto’o, Ivorians Yaya Touré and Salomon Kalou, and Senegalese duo Edouard Mendy and Sadio Mané.
Rabah Madjer, famed for his decisive goal in the 1987 UEFA European Champion Clubs’ Cup final with FC Porto, set the stage for this elite group.
Abedi Pelé, a Ghanaian attacking midfielder, played a pivotal role in leading the Ghana national team to AFCON glory in 1982 and later secured the UEFA Champions League title with Olympique de Marseille in 1993.
George Finidi, the Nigerian right winger, showcased his prowess by winning AFCON in 1994 before triumphing in the UEFA Champions League with Ajax Amsterdam in 1995.
Geremi Njitap, a Cameroonian midfielder and right defender, achieved a rare double with Real Madrid, securing both AFCON titles in 2000 and 2002.
Cameroon legend Samuel Eto’o, an iconic figure in African football, earned AFCON victories in 2000 and 2002, followed by UEFA Champions League successes with FC Barcelona in 2006 and 2009, and Inter Milan in 2010.
Yaya Touré, an Ivorian defensive midfielder, played a pivotal role in FC Barcelona’s UEFA Champions League victory in 2009, complementing his AFCON triumph in 2015 with the Ivory Coast.
John Obi Mikel, a Nigerian defensive midfielder, secured UEFA Champions League glory with Chelsea in 2012, adding to his AFCON triumph in 2013 with the Super Eagles.
Salomon Kalou, a versatile Ivorian player, celebrated UEFA Champions League success with Chelsea in 2012, complementing his AFCON victory in 2015.
Edouard Mendy, the Senegalese goalkeeper, contributed to Chelsea’s UEFA Champions League victory in 2021, aligning with his AFCON success in the same year.
