The Egyptian football giants, Al Ahly, have moved a step closer to securing a spot in the quarter-finals of the African Champions League following their 1-0 victory over Ghanaian side Medeama on Friday.
Hussein El-Shahat scored the sole goal for Al Ahly in the 48th minute, cementing their position at the top of Group D with nine points.
Meanwhile, Sudan’s Al-Hilal maintained their hopes of qualification by securing a goalless draw against Congo’s TP Mazembe on the same day, in the fifth round of matches in the competition.
Al Ahly’s victory places them in a favorable position, awaiting the outcome of the clash between Tanzania’s Young Africans and Algeria’s CR Belouizdad, who are separated by goal difference only.
This crucial match is scheduled for Saturday.
Medeama’s failure to secure points leaves them languishing at the bottom of the group with four points.
In another fixture, Al-Hilal’s draw with TP Mazembe kept their chances alive in Group B.
Both teams struggled to convert opportunities, resulting in a stalemate and a point each.
Al-Hilal’s tally now stands at five points, positioning them in second place in the group.
Their fate hinges on the outcome of the match between Tunisia’s Esperance and fellow Tunisian outfit Etoile du Sahel, also scheduled for Saturday in the same group.
