Didier Drogba, the former Ivorian striker, was named Footballer of the Year in the first edition of the Africa Top Sports Awards. Drogba, who played for Chelsea during the 2011-2012 season and later joined Shanghai, impressed with his performances, scoring 5 goals in 24 matches for Chelsea and 8 goals in 6 matches for Shanghai in 2012. The award recognized Drogba’s contributions to football during that period, marking the end of his international career after the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations where Ivory Coast was eliminated in the quarter-finals.
