Espérance de Tunis Set for Major Squad Overhaul Amid Poor Start
By BBC Sport – Football
Espérance de Tunis are preparing for a significant shake-up in their squad as the club struggles to recover from a disappointing start to the season. The Tunisian giants, one of North Africa’s most decorated clubs, have fallen short of expectations and are now looking to make decisive changes during the winter transfer window.
According to reports from local outlet Kawarji.com, the management of Espérance — also known as Sang et Or — plan to part ways with several of their foreign players in a bid to reset the team’s trajectory. Among those reportedly heading for the exit is Cameroonian forward Yannick Ndjeng.
Ndjeng, who rejoined the club in the summer of 2013, has failed to impress since his return and has struggled to find consistency on the pitch. His underwhelming performances have led the club to consider terminating his contract altogether in the coming weeks.
Another player whose future at Espérance appears uncertain is Ghanaian defender Harrison Afful. Though a key figure in recent seasons, contract renewal talks have hit a stumbling block. Afful is reportedly demanding a salary increase that the club is unwilling to meet. With no agreement in sight, the club may look to sell the player during the January window to avoid losing him on a free transfer next summer.
In contrast, Malian midfielder Fousseni Coulibaly is expected to remain with the team. His performances have been more in line with the club’s expectations, and management reportedly sees him as part of their plans moving forward.
The moves come at a crucial time for Espérance, who are under pressure from fans and the board to return to winning ways. After years of domestic dominance and strong continental showings, the team’s recent decline has prompted soul-searching and the need for bold decisions.
With the January window approaching, Espérance will hope that a refreshed squad can reignite their season and re-establish the club as a force in Tunisian and African football.
