Uganda has signalled its ambition to take center stage in the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations by vying to host either the tournament’s opening or closing ceremony, a move that would position the country at the forefront of one of football’s most watched events.

At a press briefing, the Local Organising Committee (LOC) confirmed that UShs 109.9 billion (over $29 million) has been earmarked for tournament preparations, covering operational areas from safety and security to hospitality, team services, media operations, and spectator experience.

The funding will also support branding and medical readiness, all designed to ensure Uganda delivers a world-class showcase.

Dr Dennis K. Mugimba, Chairperson of the LOC Communications and Signage Sub-Committee, highlighted the breadth of the plan:

“UShs.109.9 billion shall be allocated to the AFCON-2027 Local Organizing Committee to implement various tournament specific preparations across its thirteen sub-committees, plus preparations for hosting either the opening or closing ceremony for the TotalEnergies CAF AFCON PAMOJA 2027.”

Uganda will co-host the tournament with Kenya and Tanzania, and securing one of the flagship ceremonies would significantly elevate its profile within the three-nation arrangement. Both ceremonies are broadcast to millions globally and offer a prime opportunity to showcase Uganda’s culture, tourism, and national identity.

The push comes with lessons learned from the 2024 African Nations Championship, where Uganda, despite co-hosting alongside Kenya and Tanzania, missed out on hosting either of the ceremonies and instead staged the third-place playoff. Organizers appear determined to ensure a stronger and more visible role this time around.

Preparations are already in motion, with major infrastructure projects—including stadium upgrades, hotel expansions, airport renovations, and hospital improvements—being fast-tracked to meet the tournament’s January 2027 deadline.

Officials stress that these investments will not only support AFCON but also leave lasting benefits for the country’s sports, tourism, and service sectors.
