AFCON 2025: We got lucky – South Africa coach Hugo Broos after Angola win
Head coach of South Africa, Hugo Broos, has admitted luck was on their side following their opening day victory against Angola at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.
The Bafana Bafana capped off an impressive start to the continental showpiece on Tuesday, inflicting a 2-1 victory over the Palancas Negras of Angola.
According to Broos, the Bafana Bafana’s failure to protect the lead was unexpected and it’s something that should not happen.
“When you start the tournament, the players will also feel how things are going,” said Broos.
“We played against the Angola that plays differently from ‘African football’, it’s technical football and it’s passing football.
“For us, we were a little bit surprised after the goal we scored. We thought things are done, but it was a wake-up call, and I wake the players also at half-time.
“The players knew that if we continued to play like that, we were going to lose the game.
“I know these guys, it will not happen anymore, it was just lucky for us that we win this game so that we don’t have damage. So, it will not happen anymore.”
The Bafana Bafana will face Egypt at the Stade Adrar in Agadir on Friday in their second group game at the tournament.
