Tanzania have written a new chapter in their football history after qualifying for the Round of 16 at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations for the first time.
The Taifa Stars progressed as one of the best third-placed teams, finishing the group stage with two points.
Tanzania edged out Angola on goals scored after both sides ended with the same number of points and an identical goal difference of minus one, with Tanzania finding the net three times compared to Angola’s two.
Their historic qualification was sealed following a 1-1 draw with Tunisia in their final Group C encounter. The result saw Tunisia finish second in the group with four points, behind group winners Nigeria, while Tanzania advanced alongside them despite failing to register a win during the group phase.
Tanzania’s progression sets up a Round of 16 clash against hosts Morocco. The Atlas Lions secured their place in the knockout stage on Monday after cruising to a commanding 3-0 victory over Zambia in their final Group A fixture. That result confirmed Morocco as group winners with seven points, having recorded two wins and one draw.
Despite not winning a single match in the group stage, Tanzania’s resilience proved enough to carry them into the knockout rounds, marking a landmark achievement in their Africa Cup of Nations journey at AFCON 2025.
