South Africa coach Hugo Broos expressed his disappointment with his team’s performance following their hard-fought win over Zimbabwe.
The Bafana Bafana inflicted Zimbabwe 3-2 in their final group game at the tournament to secure qualification to the knockout stage.
South Africa’s tally rose to six points, placing them second in their group behind Egypt, who won the group with seven points.
Angola came in third place with two points, followed by Zimbabwe at the bottom of the table, which exited the tournament with one points.
Despite securing qualification to the knockout stage, the Belgian coach tactician has expressed his displeasure about their performance, while urging improvement if they are to make a mark at the tournament.
“I am not really happy with the performance or with the decisions of some of the players on the field. We have to work on this issue that has been present since the beginning of the tournament.”
“We must realize that the progress we have made over the past two or three years is no guarantee of winning the match. I said before that things will be more difficult for us compared to the previous edition.”
He explained, “If we don’t play at 100% of our strength, we will be in trouble.”
“It’s not because you’re South Africa that your rivals will be afraid of you; on the contrary, there’s a strong incentive to try and beat you. “If we don’t adopt a mindset of putting more pressure on the competitor, we will be finished quickly.”
South Africa will learn their opponent for the round of 16 after all final group games are played.
