Senegal approaches its opening match of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations against Botswana with optimism, as captain Kalidou Koulibaly outlined in a pre-match press conference.

The Lions of Teranga aim to start their Group D campaign strongly, projecting continuity despite the arrival of a new coaching staff.

Koulibaly emphasized that the transition to a new coach represents continuity rather than upheaval.

“It’s the first AFCON with a new coach, but nothing has changed. He knows the team well. He’s like a big brother to us,” the centre-back said. Koulibaly highlighted the coach’s deep familiarity with the team and the local football environment, describing it as a key advantage for the squad.

The captain also stressed the preparation undertaken ahead of the game. “We studied the Botswana team very thoroughly,” Koulibaly explained.

He confirmed that the team remains faithful to the principles instilled by former coach Aliou Cissé, while adapting to the new coach’s personal approach.

“We’re continuing what we experienced with Aliou, but he has his own personal approach. He gives us different perspectives,” Koulibaly added, pointing to the blend of continuity and fresh ideas shaping Senegal’s strategy.

Koulibaly also praised the coaching staff’s understanding of local realities.

“On a daily basis, it’s good to have someone who knows the country, the people, the atmosphere, because since we don’t live there, they can keep us on the right track,” he noted. He described the staff as very competent, reflecting the squad’s confidence in the leadership guiding them through the tournament.

Beyond tactical preparation, Koulibaly emphasized unity within the squad.

Drawing on his own experience and that of senior players, he called for collective support for the coaching team.

“It’s up to us to follow him and stand behind him because he has the right ideas, the right formula. For the moment, it’s excellent and the new federation is satisfied,” he said.

Senegal now looks to translate this confidence into results on the pitch against Botswana, aiming to set a strong tone for their AFCON 2025 campaign.

With a blend of experience, preparation, and cohesion, the Lions of Teranga enter the tournament ready to assert themselves as one of the continent’s leading sides.
