Semi Ajayi was named Man of the Match after a commanding display in Nigeria’s 2–1 win over Tanzania in their AFCON 2025 opener in Morocco.
The Hull City defender not only scored the Super Eagles’ first goal but also anchored the back line in a tense Group C stage clash.
Ajayi broke the deadlock nine minutes before half-time, rising highest to head in an Alex Iwobi corner that had been earned when Victor Osimhen’s effort was cleared off the line. Beyond the goal, he read the game intelligently, winning aerial duels and organising the defence as Tanzania searched for a way back.
After Tanzania equalised through Charles M’Bombwa early in the second half, Nigeria hit back almost immediately with a stunning Ademola Lookman strike, but Ajayi’s calm presence remained crucial as the team saw out the result. His contribution at both ends highlighted Nigeria’s determination to share the responsibility for goals and defensive work across the team.
Nigeria will play Tunisia in their next group game on December 27th.
