Algeria captain Riyad Mahrez is currently the second highest scorer for the national team following his strike in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations clash against Burkina Faso.
The former Manchester City and Leicester City star emerged as the hero as Algeria triumphed over the Stallions of Burkina Faso to secure qualification to the knockout stage of the continental showpiece on Saturday.
Mahrez converted perfectly from the spot, as Algeria cruised to a narrow victory over Burkina Faso in a high-stake clash. It was his third goal for the Desert Foxes at the tournament, having netted a brace against Sudan in their opener.
The experienced attacker now has 37 goals for the national team, moving him up to outright second place on Algeria’s all-time top scorers list, overtaking Abdelhafid Tasfaout.
Mahrez is only behind Islam Slimani, who currently leads the all-time top scorer lists with 45 goals. This means the former Manchester City star is eight goals away from equaling Slimani’s scoring record.
The 34-yar-old made his debut for the Algeria national team in 2014 and has since established himself as a key member of the team, racking up 109 appearances and scoring 37 goals across the period.
