Algeria crashed out of AFCON 2025 in the quarterfinals after a bruising 2-0 defeat to a dominant Nigeria side at Grand Stade de Marrakech.
Victor Osimhen struck in the 47th minute before Akor Adams added a second on 57 minutes, as the Super Eagles controlled the game from start to finish.
Nigeria fired 13 shots to Algeria’s 3, but the most worrying statistic for the Desert Warriors was even harsher. Over the entire 90 minutes, Algeria failed to register a single shot on target, a catastrophic attacking return for a team of their pedigree.
According to Sofascore, this impotent display revived memories of another dark night: the 2015 AFCON group match against Ghana. That day, Algeria also lost 1-0 to a late Asamoah Gyan goal in stoppage time without managing any effort on target, despite their attacking talent.
This latest exit leaves serious questions hanging over Algeria’s offensive structure and creativity at major tournaments.
Nigeria, meanwhile, march on to face hosts Morocco in the semifinals on Wednesday at Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium in Rabat, full of confidence and momentum.
