Moussa Niakhaté targets continental glory as Lyon form fuels Senegal ambition

Moussa Niakhaté arrives at the Africa Cup of Nations with confidence built on one of the strongest periods of his club career, determined to translate his outstanding form with Olympique Lyonnais into success on the continental stage.

The Senegal defender has emerged as a central figure in Lyon’s revival during the first half of the 2025–2026 season, establishing himself as one of the most consistent centre-backs across domestic and European competition.

Reliable, composed and commanding, Niakhaté has been a cornerstone of Lyon’s performances in Ligue 1 and the Europa League, and now hopes to carry that influence into Senegal’s campaign in Morocco.

Lyon’s current position would have seemed highly improbable only months ago.

The club entered the season surrounded by uncertainty, including administrative issues that had threatened its place in Ligue 1.

Expectations were muted, and optimism was limited even among the most loyal supporters.

Yet under Paulo Fonseca, Lyon stabilised quickly and began to exceed projections across competitions.

While the summer recruitment lacked headline-grabbing names, Fonseca’s reputation for maximising his squad soon proved justified.

Several players rediscovered their best level, none more so than Niakhaté.

Signed for a significant fee from Nottingham Forest, the Senegal international had endured a difficult debut season in France, struggling at times to impose himself and justify the club’s investment.

This campaign, however, has marked a clear turning point.

Strong displays week after week have seen the 29-year-old regain authority and consistency.

Lyon now sit fifth in Ligue 1 and top their Europa League group, with Niakhaté recognised as one of the leaders of a rejuvenated defence.

That resurgence has sharpened focus on his role with Senegal, where expectations remain high.

The Africa Cup of Nations represents a defining moment for a player in peak form, and Niakhaté is acutely aware of the scale of the opportunity.

Speaking to OL TV after Lyon’s narrow victory over Le Havre, he laid bare his ambitions.

I have another big goal that I set for myself at the beginning of the season, he said.  It’s an important season, perhaps even the season of a lifetime. Africa Cup of Nations, World Cup, Ligue 1, Europa League—it’s very rare in football, all of that. I have a huge objective with Senegal, and I’ve prepared for it in the best possible way during my first few months with OL.

His words reflect both personal belief and collective aspiration.

Senegal head into the tournament with ambitions of lifting the trophy, and Niakhaté sees his club form as the foundation for delivering on that promise.

My goal will be to return (to Lyon) as late as possible. Bring back the trophy? I hope so, I’ll do everything I can, he added. Now, you know me, I’ll give it my all and try to return as late as possible, after Clinton. It would be great to start the next six months with a trophy.

For Senegal, Niakhaté’s momentum could prove decisive.

For the defender himself, the Africa Cup of Nations is more than another competition — it is the chance to crown a remarkable season with silverware and confirm his place among the continent’s elite.
