Moroccan journalists gave Nigeria coach Éric Chelle a warm and enthusiastic reception as he entered the press conference room following the Super Eagles’ 4-2 victory over Egypt on penalties in the third-place match of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.
The applause reflected not only appreciation for the competitive encounter but also respect for Chelle and his team’s professionalism throughout the tournament.
Chelle, who has been widely praised for guiding Nigeria to a podium finish, expressed his gratitude to the Moroccan public for their hospitality.
“We are very happy with third place in this beautiful edition, and thanks are due to every Moroccan citizen as well as the organizing committee,” he said.
The Malian coach highlighted the positive experience of competing in Morocco, noting the warm welcome and the excellent organization of the tournament.
“Thank you to this country, which organized this edition of the Africa Cup of Nations so very well.. Personally, I really enjoyed being here, and so did my team.. I also thank the people of Fez, where the atmosphere was simply amazing,” Chelle added.
Nigeria’s semifinal exit came at the hands of hosts Morocco, who defeated the Super Eagles on penalties to reach the final against Senegal, scheduled for Sunday evening.
Despite missing out on a place in the championship match, Nigeria’s performance and Chelle’s leadership earned widespread respect, with the standing ovation from Moroccan journalists underlining the recognition of their achievements.
The gesture also highlighted the growing camaraderie and sportsmanship on the continent, emphasizing that success in football extends beyond titles to the professionalism, conduct, and competitive spirit displayed on the pitch.
