Goalkeeper Mohamed El Shenawy praised Egypt’s players for their spirit and discipline at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations after the Pharaohs finished fourth following a penalty shootout defeat to Nigeria in the third‑place match.
He thanked his teammates for their commitment throughout a demanding tournament.
Speaking to beIN SPORTS, El Shenawy said everyone followed instructions and showed high levels of unity and focus. He stressed that Egypt “defied expectations” by reaching the semi finals, before losing third place on spot kicks as Nigeria converted their penalties more clinically.
El Shenawy also expressed appreciation for coach Hossam Hassan and his staff, as well as the Egyptian FA, highlighting the support and conditions provided for the squad. He rejected calls to scrap the AFCON third‑place game, arguing it offers valuable minutes to players who have not featured much.
The veteran keeper concluded that Egypt “gained several players” from the Nigeria match, noting that five new faces were introduced and performed well, giving the national team fresh options and optimism for future tournaments.
