Tanzania coach Miguel Gamondi mixed frustration with pride as he reflected on his team’s 1-1 draw against Uganda in a fiery East African derby at AFCON 2025.
Gamondi admitted his side had left the pitch feeling they could have taken all three points, especially after producing a much-improved second half. “First, we are a little disappointed that we did not win but I do believe we had a very good game with high intensity,” he said, noting that some cheap turnovers in attack had cost them control at key moments.
He praised his players for raising their level after the break, when Tanzania started to dominate and look more dangerous going forward. They went ahead when Simon Msuva converted a penalty after Alhassan Baba handled Alphonce Msanga’s shot, only to concede an equaliser 10 minutes later from a Karl Ikpeazu header.
Gamondi accepted that a defensive lapse on the cross had undone much of their good work. “We created chances, dominated and were dangerous but we made a mistake to allow for a cross which resulted in a goal,” he explained, before apologising to Tanzanian fans and promising that the team would “continue working hard in this tough competition” ahead of a crucial game against Tunisia.
