Egypt winger Mahmoud Hassan Trezeguet reached a historic milestone by featuring in the Pharaohs’ third‑place playoff against Nigeria at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco.
His appearance in that match further strengthened his position among the most capped Egyptian players in major international tournaments.
By taking the field against the Super Eagles, Trezeguet increased his tally to 30 matches for Egypt across the Africa Cup of Nations and the World Cup combined. That total allowed him to move outright into second place on the list of Egypt’s most‑used players in major competitions, one match ahead of goalkeeping icon Essam El Hadary, who slipped to third.
At the top of the ranking remains former Anderlecht and Beşiktaş star Ahmed Hassan, who holds the historic record with 32 appearances in major tournaments for the national team.
This latest step means Trezeguet is now just two games away from equaling Hassan’s long‑standing mark, putting him in a strong position to threaten what once looked like an unbreakable record. Given his continued importance to the national side and Egypt’s regular presence at major events, the prospect of Trezeguet becoming the outright leader now feels very realistic.
The match in which he set this new benchmark came as Egypt tried to salvage a podium finish after a painful semi‑final defeat. The Pharaohs had lost 1–0 to Senegal in the last four, ending their hopes of lifting the continental trophy. Nigeria, for their part, arrived in the third‑place game after being knocked out by hosts Morocco on penalties, following a tense goalless draw in their semi‑final.
Against this backdrop of disappointment for both sides, Trezeguet’s record‑breaking appearance offered Egyptian fans a moment of pride and a reminder of his enduring influence in the national shirt.
