South Africa coach, Hugo Broos, has described the penalty awarded to Egypt in their second 2025 Africa Cup of Nations clash as ridiculous.

The Bafana Bafana fell short to the Pharaohs of Egypt, who recorded their second consecutive victory at the continental showpiece to book a place in the knockout stage on Friday.

The highly competitive Group B clash, held at the Stade d’Agadir ended 1-0 in Egypt’s favour, with Mohammed Salah firing home the only goal from the spot before the half hour mark.

However, the Belgian gaffer has raised concerns about the penalty decision by the referee, claiming Mohammed Salah was even surprised with the call.

“Even Mo Salah said to me after the game, ‘I was surprised it was a penalty. It was ridiculous; really ridiculous.’” He said.

The Bafana Bafana has recorded one win and one defeat at the continental showpiece after two matches so far. Despite the defeat, South Africa’s chances of making it to the knockout stage remain intact, with a game in hand in Group B.

Hugo Broos and his charges will be hoping for a victory in their last group game against Zimbabwe to make it to the knockout phase.

Meanwhile, Egypt is the first nations at the tournament to secure qualification to the knockout stage after recording two straights victories. Before beating South Africa, the Pharaohs had triumphed over Zimbabwe in their opening game.
