Egypt head coach Hossam Hassan has played down suggestions that Senegal represent a psychological barrier for the Pharaohs ahead of their Africa Cup of Nations semi-final in Tangier.
Speaking at Tuesday’s press conference, he said Egypt are seven-time African champions and “there is no such thing as a curse in football,” stressing full respect for Senegal but absolute belief in his squad.
Hassan admitted Senegal have a small advantage after remaining in Tangier while Egypt had to relocate from Agadir, but he underlined that his players are mentally fresh and fully ready to fight for a place in the final. He explained: “We have studied Senegal very well and know their strengths and weaknesses. I have big players who are giving everything to win the title.”
The coach described this AFCON as the strongest edition yet, praising Morocco’s organisation and stadiums and highlighting the success of African coaches, including Walid Regragui with Morocco.
Hassan said a local coach communicates motivation better and noted most of Egypt’s trophies came under Egyptians. He also hailed Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane and Achraf Hakimi as examples of African excellence, calling the Salah–Mané rivalry a brilliant model for the continent.
