Benin enter 2026 full of ambition at the Africa Cup of Nations, as they prepare to face Egypt in the round of 16 next Monday, January 5, boosted by a remarkable financial incentive.
Benin FA president Mathurin de Chacus has announced a bonus of 200 million CFA francs, around 300,000 euros, if the team reaches the quarterfinals, describing it as a strong message to lift the squad’s morale in their quest for continental glory.
The past year was inconsistent for Benin, who played 10 official matches in 2025, winning only 3, drawing once and losing 6. The “Leopards” scored 10 goals and conceded 15, highlighting the challenge they face at this level. Currently ranked 92nd in the FIFA standings, Benin still see this AFCON knockout round as a rare chance to write a new chapter in their history.
The clash with Egypt will be a serious test against the competition’s most decorated team.
Benin dream of repeating their famous achievement against Morocco in the same stage of AFCON 2019 in Egypt, when they reached the quarterfinals by winning 4–1 on penalties after a 1–1 draw with the Atlas Lions.
