Egypt continued their poor record in penalty shootouts at the Africa Cup of Nations, after succumbing to a defeat against Nigeria in the third-place clash on Saturday.

The match, held at the Mohammed V Stadium in Casablanca had to be decided on penalties following a pulsating goalless draw.

With this defeat, the Pharaohs has suffered three consecutive defeats in penalty shootouts in the continental showpiece, having previously won six occasions.

Before the defeat against Nigeria, Egypt had suffered to a penalty shootouts defeat to the Democratic Republic of Congo in the round of 16 of the 2023 tournament held in Ivory Coast.

Penalty kicks also stood in the way of the Egyptian dream of the African title, when they went in favor of Senegal in the final of the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations in Cameroon.

In recent years, at the level of World Cup qualifiers, the Pharaohs also lost on penalties to Senegal, which prevented them from qualifying for the 2022 Qatar World Cup.

Egypt had been defeated by the Taranga Lions (1-0) in the semi-finals, while Nigeria lost on penalties against host Morocco.

The North Africa football heavyweights will turn their attention to the 2026 World Cup tournament to be held in the USA, Canada and Mexico.
