Egypt defender Mohamed Hamdi says he will continue to support his teammates at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nation despite being ruled out of tournament.
The 30-year-old succumbed to a frustrating injury in the last 16 clash against Benin on Monday, held at the Stade d’Agadir in Morocco.
The experienced midfielder collided with his opponent and had to be replaced by Ahmed Abou El Fotouh in the 46th minute, just before the end of the first half on Monday.
Before being substituted, the Pyramids marksman had showcased great performance in the midfield for the Pharaohs, who are keen on securing their eighth AFCON title in Morocco.
However, Mohamed Abou El-Ela, who is the team doctor for Egypt has confirmed a ruptured anterior cruciate ligament (ACL), ruling him out of the tournament.
“A frustrating injury at a difficult time. I had hoped to complete the tournament and be with the Egyptian national team until the end of the journey and contribute to winning the title.” He wrote on Instagram.
“I will be there to support and encourage my teammates on the national team, along with our great fans.”
“Thank you for all the support I have received since my injury and my return soon, and most importantly, that the national team will make the Egyptian public happy”
His absence comes at a crucial time for the Pharaohs, who are preparing for a tough quarter-final encounter. Egypt will face the winner of the match between Burkina Faso and defending champions Ivory Coast on Saturday.
