Didier Deschamps, head coach of the French national team, confirmed that he is closely following the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations currently being held in Morocco.
Speaking to Al Sharq TV on the sidelines of the Global Sports Summit in Dubai, he explained that his interest in the tournament is mainly sporting, given that Senegal, one of Africa’s strongest teams, will face France in the group stage of the next World Cup.
Deschamps said it is natural for him to watch AFCON matches, even during the year-end holidays, because his passion for football and the demands of his job require him to keep an eye on many games, even if he cannot watch every minute. He avoided naming a single clear favourite, stressing instead that the title race is wide open.
However, he did point out that Egypt, Cameroon and Morocco look among the most likely contenders to lift the trophy.
His comments underline how AFCON, especially this edition in Morocco, has grown into a truly global event that attracts the attention of top coaches and analysts around the world, with traditional giants and ambitious outsiders all battling to write new chapters in African football history.
