Benin coach Gernot Rohr insists his outfit has a good chance of advancing to the quarter-finals of the Africa Cup of Nations at the expense of Egypt.
The Squirrels qualified for the round of 16 of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations after finishing third in Group D.
Benin will, however, face their Egyptian counterparts on Monday, January 5, at the Adrar Stadium in Agadir, with both teams seeking for qualification to the quarterfinals of the tournament, being held in Morocco.
Despite acknowledging Egypt quality, the German tactician believes his side are capable of upsetting Egypt in the round 16 clash.
“Despite its limited resources, small Benin is capable of putting on a respectable performance against the strong Egyptian team and competing for qualification to the quarter-finals.
“We managed to come out of the Senegal match without injuries or expulsions, which allows us to play the round of 16 against Egypt with a full squad.”
“Three of our players have previously played in Egypt and know Egyptian football very well. We humbly believe that we will have a say in the round of 16 match against Egypt.”
The winner between Egypt and Benin will meet the winner between the leader of Group F (Cameroon, Ivory Coast or Mozambique).
