Algeria are reportedly set to formally submit a protest to the Confederation of African Football (CAF) following their quarter-final defeat to Nigeria at the ongoing 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco.
The Desert Foxes were booted out of the continental showpiece on Saturday after succumbing to a 2-0 quarterfinals defeat to Nigeria in a highly competitive clash.
Goals from Galatasaray star Victor Osimhen and Akor Adams were enough for the Super Eagles to qualify at the expense of their North African counterparts.
But the Algerian Football Federation (FAF) are expected to protest on several decisions in the high-stake clash. The FA believes the Desert Foxes were unfairly treated, claiming a clear penalty appeal was wrongly denied.
The federation also raised concerns over several refereeing decisions, which they allege consistently favoured Nigeria, the eventual winners of the match.
Besides, Algeria have accused the Senegalese referee, Issa Sy, of being bias against their team throughout the contest, citing what they described as inconsistent officiating at crucial moments.
Beyond the on-field decisions, the FAF also alleged that the referee failed to shake hands with Algerian players after the final whistle, an action they labelled unprofessional. They also claimed that Nigerian players provoked Algerian officials and players following the end of the match.
Nigeria will face hosts Morocco in Rabat on January 14, chasing a fourth AFCON title later this week with confidence.
The North African outfit will now turn their attention to the upcoming 2026 World Cup tournament to be staged in the USA, Canada and Mexico.
