Ivorian football legends Didier Drogba and Yacine Idriss Diallo, the current president of the Ivorian Football Federation, have buried the hatchet, rekindling hopes for a triumphant campaign by the Elephants in the ongoing Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2023.
The Ivorian football fraternity had been marred by divisions since the last elections to the Ivorian Football Federation, primarily stemming from the setback faced by Didier Drogba, the preferred candidate of the majority of Ivorians.
With Ivory Coast hosting the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, there were collective yearnings for rival factions to set aside their differences and rally behind a common cause – the quest to witness the Elephants clinch the coveted trophy on home soil.
Against this backdrop, the Elephants, currently converging at La Maison Palmier in Abidjan-Cocody for AFCON 2023, were graced by the visit and support of former Ivorian internationals and active players.
Notably, the presence of Ivorian football legends Didier Drogba, ex-captain of the Elephants and the linchpin of the 2015 African champions, Serey Dié, Copa Barry, and the young international player Hamed Junior Traoré, who is unfortunately absent from AFCON due to illness, resonated with the Ivorian football community.
A symbolic moment occurred as Didier Drogba and Yacine Idriss Diallo, despite past differences, sat side by side in the company of the players. The gesture marked a significant step towards healing the fractures within the Ivorian football fraternity.
