AFCON 2023: Adam Ounas shines for Algeria and sparks resurgence at Lille

Algerian midfielder Adam Ounas has emerged as a key player for both Algeria and his club, Lille, following a challenging period marked by injuries and loss of form.

Prior to the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), Ounas navigated a turbulent chapter at Lille, grappling with a series of injuries that impacted his form and confidence.

The catalyst for Ounas’ resurgence, as revealed by the player himself, was the rigorous winter preparation undertaken with the Fennecs ahead of the AFCON.

“It was very, very hot; we prepared well. It also allowed me to sharpen myself a little. Today, I am very happy to continue,” expressed Ounas, underscoring the impact of the intensive preparations.

Lille’s head coach, Paulo Fonseca, acknowledged the transformation, stating, “This is the real Ounas, full of talent, a different player.

He came back really motivated from the AFCON, perhaps also because he is at the end of his contract. When he works like that, he’s obviously a different player.”

Ounas, who also shed weight during this period, admitted to overcoming mental barriers that had hindered his performance earlier in the season.

The fear of injuries and hesitancy to give his all on the field gradually dissipated, leading to a newfound determination.

His mental breakthrough was palpable, with Fonseca noting, “If in the past he said he didn’t like it too much, now he shows me that he is ready to play in this position.”

Post-AFCON, Ounas has showcased his versatility, discarding reluctance to play on the left, emphasizing his commitment to the team’s success over personal statistics.

Although Lille faced a setback against Toulouse (3-1) in his most recent outing, Ounas’ performances in the five matches since his return have been notably influential.
