AFCON 2017 Qualifiers: South Africa Held to a Frustrating Draw by Gambia
South Africa’s Bafana Bafana were left to rue missed opportunities as they were held to a disappointing 0-0 draw by Gambia on Saturday, in their opening match of the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.
Despite dominating possession and creating several chances, the home side failed to find the breakthrough against a well-organized Gambian defense. The result favors the Scorpions, who will take confidence from securing a valuable away point in their Group M campaign.
South Africa, semifinalists in the 2015 AFCON, will now have to pick up the pace as they look ahead to tougher fixtures. Meanwhile, Cameroon and Mauritania are set to clash on Sunday in the group’s other opening fixture.
South Africa Starting XI:
Khune – Ngcongca (c), Coetzee, Hlatshwayo, Matlaba – Jali, Mahlangu, Serero, Manyisa, Patosi – Gabuza.
