Egypt Withdraws from 2017 AFCON Host Bid, Supports Algeria’s Candidacy
BBC-style rewrite | Approx. 400 words

Egypt has officially withdrawn from the race to host the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), confirming reports from local authorities earlier this week. The decision paves the way for Algeria to secure the hosting rights, with Egypt now offering its full support to its North African neighbour.

“We have decided to withdraw our candidacy and support Algeria,” said Khaled Abdel Aziz, Egypt’s Minister of Youth and Sports, in an interview with local media. The announcement marks a significant shift in the race to host the prestigious continental tournament.

While the exact reason behind Egypt’s withdrawal remains unclear, several Arab media outlets suggest that it could be part of a diplomatic agreement between the two nations. It is believed that the decision aligns with a deal between Mohammed Raouraoua, president of the Algerian Football Federation (FAF), and Egypt, which also includes Raouraoua’s decision not to seek re-election for a new term on the FIFA Executive Committee.

Despite these speculations, the primary outcome is that Egypt is no longer a contender to host the 2017 AFCON. The decision narrows the field of potential hosts to Algeria, Gabon, and Ghana. The final decision will be made on April 8, with the Confederation of African Football (CAF) set to announce the host country.

The withdrawal of Egypt has been a surprise to many, especially considering the country’s history of hosting major continental tournaments, including the 2010 AFCON. However, the support for Algeria indicates a cooperative shift within North Africa, with both countries showing solidarity in the region’s bid for greater influence in African football.

As the countdown to the CAF decision continues, the focus will now be on how Algeria, Gabon, and Ghana make their final bids to host one of Africa’s most anticipated football events.
