AFCON 2015: Stéphane Mbia Cleared for Cameroon Duty Despite Injury Scare
Cameroon captain Stéphane Mbia has provided a timely boost to the Indomitable Lions ahead of the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations, confirming he is fit to join the squad after sustaining an injury scare in Spain’s La Liga.
The Sevilla midfielder was forced off during last weekend’s match following a dangerous tackle, prompting fears he might miss the tournament. However, the 28-year-old took to Twitter on Monday to allay concerns, confirming that he is ready for AFCON duty.
“15 days of rest following my injury but ready for the 2015 African Cup of Nations. Leaving tomorrow for the national team,” Mbia posted, reassuring Cameroonian fans and coaching staff alike.
Medical examinations revealed a myofascial lesion, but the damage appears to be minor and will not prevent Mbia from participating in the tournament. That said, he will miss Cameroon’s opening match due to a one-match suspension carried over from the qualifiers — a result of his red card in the final group game against Ivory Coast.
Mbia’s availability is welcome news for coach Volker Finke, as the experienced midfielder remains a key figure for Cameroon, both on and off the pitch. Known for his leadership and defensive resilience, Mbia will be crucial to the Indomitable Lions’ hopes of progressing from Group D, where they face stiff competition from Ivory Coast, Mali, and Guinea.
The Cameroonian squad began their AFCON training camp in Yaoundé on Monday, with preparations including a scheduled friendly against DR Congo on January 7.
Mbia’s swift recovery and commitment to join the squad underline his importance to a youthful Cameroon side aiming to recapture continental glory. While he will be absent from the opening game, his return for the second group match will undoubtedly strengthen the team’s ambitions in Equatorial Guinea.
