AFCON 2015: Morocco Faces CAF Ultimatum Over Hosting Decision
With just 72 hours left, Morocco stands at a crossroads. The North African nation must inform the Confederation of African Football (CAF) by Saturday whether it will go ahead with hosting the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations as scheduled. This follows a firm ultimatum issued earlier in the week after a high-level meeting between Moroccan officials and CAF representatives.
CAF has categorically rejected any proposal to postpone the tournament, emphasizing that the dates must be respected. Morocco initially requested a delay due to fears over the spread of the Ebola virus, which has ravaged parts of West Africa and sparked public health concerns.
However, Moroccan authorities continue to deliberate.
“It’s a strategic and important decision that requires patience and deep reflection,” said Mohamed Ouzzine, Morocco’s Minister of Sports, in a statement to AFP.
Despite the uncertainty, signs point toward a possible reversal of Morocco’s earlier stance. According to recent reports, the kingdom may ultimately honor its hosting obligations, which would come as a relief to CAF, participating nations, and football fans across the continent.
A final decision is expected imminently. Should Morocco confirm its withdrawal, CAF would be forced to rapidly find an alternative host or face a serious organizational crisis just months before kickoff.
