CAN 2015: Group C Set for Explosive Battles
The draw for the 30th edition of the Africa Cup of Nations (CAN), held on Wednesday in Malabo, Equatorial Guinea, has produced what many are calling the “group of death”. Group C will feature four African football heavyweights: Ghana, Algeria, South Africa, and Senegal, all of whom are strong contenders with rich histories and ambitious squads.
Each of the four teams boasts significant achievements:
-
Ghana, three-time champions (1963, 1965, 1982), also reached the Round of 16 at the 2014 World Cup.
-
Algeria, champions in 1990, were one of Africa’s best performers in Brazil 2014.
-
South Africa, winners in 1996, return with a young but promising team.
-
Senegal, a dominant force in African football, are looking to make a strong comeback after missing the 2013 edition.
Acknowledging the stiff competition, Maxwell Konadu, assistant coach of Ghana, emphasized the need for focus and respect for all opponents.
“It’s a very, very tough group. The other teams have said it’s the ‘group of death’—and I agree. South Africa has a fairly young team, but they play very well. We must not underestimate anyone. Algeria and South Africa are in good form, and Senegal is a powerhouse in African football,” Konadu told RFI.
With such balance and firepower across the board, Group C promises some of the tournament’s most thrilling matches. Only two of these giants will emerge from the group—making every game a potential final.
