AFCON 2015: Gervinho Returns as Ivory Coast Prepare for Algeria Quarter-Final
Ivory Coast forward Gervinho is set to return to action just in time for Sunday’s quarter-final showdown against Algeria at the Africa Cup of Nations in Malabo, and the Roma star is eager to make an immediate impact.
The 27-year-old missed the Elephants’ last two group matches after receiving a two-match suspension for violent conduct in their Group D opener against Guinea, which ended 1-1. Gervinho was shown a straight red card for striking Guinea’s Naby Keita in the face — an incident that drew a swift sanction from the Confederation of African Football (CAF) disciplinary committee.
Now back and eligible, Gervinho is determined to help his team overcome what he considers one of the toughest tests of the tournament.
“It’s clear that we’re going to face a good Algerian team,” said Gervinho. “We’ll need to be strong on all fronts next Sunday if we’re to qualify for the semi-finals.”
While Sunday’s encounter will bring back memories of the 2010 AFCON, when Algeria knocked Ivory Coast out at this same stage with a dramatic 3-2 extra-time win, the Elephants insist there is no desire for revenge.
“There will be no revenge for us against Algeria,” added the former Arsenal forward. “We’re going into this game with one goal — to win.”
Ivory Coast progressed to the quarter-finals after a hard-fought 1-0 win over Cameroon in their final group game, a result that secured second place in Group D behind Guinea. With Gervinho back in the squad, coach Hervé Renard will have a key attacking option restored as he prepares for what promises to be one of the most anticipated matches of the tournament.
Algeria, who many considered pre-tournament favourites, have shown flashes of brilliance in the group stage but have also looked vulnerable at times. Their dynamic forward line, including Riyad Mahrez and Islam Slimani (who is battling a thigh strain), will pose a significant challenge for the Ivorian defence.
Gervinho’s pace and creativity will be crucial if the Elephants are to unlock Algeria’s backline. His return could prove decisive in a contest that promises high intensity and quality.
Kick-off is scheduled for 19:30 GMT on Sunday in Malabo, with a place in the semi-finals — and the dream of a long-awaited continental title — on the line.
