Afcon 2015: Tiebreaker Rules for the Group Stage
As no team has yet qualified or been eliminated after the second round of group matches at the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations, understanding the tiebreaker criteria is crucial going into the final matchday.
In the event of a tie on points, the following rules will be used in order to determine team rankings:
Greatest number of points obtained in direct confrontations between the tied teams.
Best goal difference in the matches among the tied teams.
Most goals scored in the matches among the tied teams.
Best overall goal difference in all group matches.
Most goals scored in all group matches.
Fair play ranking (based on the number of red and yellow cards).
Drawing of lots by the CAF Organizing Committee.
These rules aim to fairly separate teams with equal points and ensure that both performance and discipline play a role in determining who advances to the quarterfinals.
