Adolf Bitegeko: Kaizer Chiefs sign first Tanzanian in club’s history on two-year deal

Tanzanian midfielder Adolf Mtasingwa Bitegeko has become the first player from his country to sign for Kaizer Chiefs, in a landmark move hailed for his work-rate and honesty but accompanied by calls for patience from the club’s demanding supporters.

Historic signing for Soweto giants

Bitegeko, 27, joins Amakhosi from Tanzanian Premier League club Azam FC on a two-year contract, with an option for a third season. His move makes him the first Tanzanian footballer to wear the famous gold and black of Chiefs since the club’s formation in 1970, adding a new chapter to the growing link between East African talent and South African football.

The midfielder, who has also spent six years playing in Iceland, arrives from a club regarded as financially stable but with a relatively modest fan culture compared with the intense, high-pressure environment at Chiefs.

‘An honest midfielder who will never cheat the badge’

Uhuru Selemani Mwambungu, one of only a handful of Tanzanians to have played in South Africa and regarded as his country’s longest-serving footballer in the PSL era, believes Chiefs have acquired a player whose commitment will quickly win respect in the dressing room.

“Chiefs have found an honest midfielder who will never cheat the badge and will always give them both hard work and commitment to the badge,” says Mwambungu.

“Based on what I have seen of him, Adolf has presence in central midfield, provides grit, and always honest in the way he plays which will energise his teammates.

“Adolf will give Chiefs the same hard work that Issa Sarr gave Orlando Pirates in midfield.”

Mwambungu, speaking from Dar es Salaam, says he is convinced Bitegeko has the attributes of a modern holding midfielder, with the versatility to play slightly higher up the pitch when needed.

“He has everything for a proper number six who can also play at eight.

“The plus for him is that besides being able to provide cover for the defence he can also play.

“I have no doubt about Adolf.”

Call for patience from Amakhosi faithful

While optimistic about Bitegeko’s potential impact, Mwambungu has cautioned that the transition into the Premier Soccer League may not be immediate, particularly given the intensity of the Kaizer Chiefs fan base.

“However, Chiefs fans will have to be patient with Adolf because he is coming from a club without fans despite being a good paying club.

“The challenge with Kaizer Chiefs fans is that they don’t have patience.

“They just want results.

“Chiefs will be different for him in the beginning because the pace of the PSL is fast, but he will catch up with time.

“If you don’t give them what they want then they push you out.

“I foresee success for him at Chiefs, and I have to give credit to his management team for getting him this opportunity,” says Mwambungu talking to KickOff.com from Dar es Salaam.

International pedigree with Taifa Stars

Bitegeko is a full international with Tanzania’s senior national team, the Taifa Stars, adding international experience to a Chiefs midfield that has undergone significant restructuring in recent seasons.

His combination of physical presence, defensive awareness and ability to use the ball is seen as crucial for a club seeking to re-establish itself among South Africa’s title contenders after a prolonged trophy drought.

As Chiefs prepare for the new campaign, the spotlight will fall on how quickly their historic Tanzanian signing adapts to the tempo and scrutiny of life in Soweto – and whether the club’s supporters will grant him the time that those who know him insist he needs.
