Adingra leads Cote d’Ivoire rout as South Korea pay for missed chances
Cote d’Ivoire delivered a commanding statement performance on Friday evening, sweeping aside South Korea 4-0 in an international friendly in Milton Keynes as they began life after their disappointing Africa Cup of Nations quarter-final exit in January.
The emphatic result underlined a renewed attacking sharpness, with Simon Adingra at the heart of a clinical display that punished South Korea’s early wastefulness.
The Taegeuk Warriors started brightly and should have taken the lead inside the opening exchanges. Hee-Chan Hwang came closest after 12 minutes, his long-range effort sailing narrowly over the crossbar.
Moments later, Hyeon Gyu-Oh struck the inside of the post with a well-taken effort, as Cote d’Ivoire rode their luck during a nervy opening spell.
However, the momentum shifted decisively in favour of the Elephants midway through the first half. A swift attacking move saw Martial Godo thread a precise pass into the path of Evann Guessand, who kept his composure to slot home from a tight angle and open the scoring just past the half-hour mark.
The goal settled Cote d’Ivoire, who began to assert greater control and pose a consistent threat going forward.
South Korea continued to threaten in flashes, but their inability to convert chances proved costly. Goalkeeper Jo Hyeon-Woo was called into action to deny Emmanuel Agbadou’s powerful header, while Seol Young-Woo was left frustrated after seeing his effort rebound off the woodwork.
Cote d’Ivoire capitalised ruthlessly on those missed opportunities. Deep into first-half stoppage time, Adingra produced a moment of individual brilliance, turning his marker before driving a fierce shot into the bottom corner to double the lead.
That second goal effectively broke South Korea’s resistance and set the tone for a dominant second-half showing, as Cote d’Ivoire cruised to an assured victory that signals a strong response and a potential turning point following their AFCON disappointment.
