Ademola Lookman puts transfer heartbreak behind him to focus on Nigeria’s World Cup qualifiers
Reigning African Player of the Year Ademola Lookman has put aside the frustration of a failed summer transfer to concentrate on Nigeria’s decisive 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier against Rwanda.
The 27-year-old forward, who plays for Serie A side Atalanta, had been linked with a move away from Bergamo but saw his hopes of a switch collapse late in the window.
Despite the disappointment, Lookman reported to the Super Eagles camp in upbeat spirits and took part in Wednesday’s training session as preparations intensified for Saturday’s clash with the Wasps in Uyo.
His presence adds further firepower to a squad that also includes Galatasaray striker Victor Osimhen and Fulham duo Alex Iwobi and Calvin Bassey.
Captain William Troost-Ekong welcomed the full turnout of players and urged Nigerians to rally behind the team.
“We’re here now, just waiting for the last few players to arrive very shortly. I’m looking forward to having a full house in training tonight,” he said.
“The boys are very focused, and we’re looking forward to the game on Saturday. I want to thank the fans for their support, and I ask them to continue encouraging us — be there in the stadium on Saturday, keep praying for us, and rally with everyone else in Nigeria.”
Nigeria’s situation in Group C underlines the urgency of the tie. With just seven points from seven games, the Super Eagles sit in fourth place, trailing leaders South Africa and second-placed Rwanda.
Only a win will keep their qualification hopes alive, especially after missing the 2022 World Cup in Qatar following a playoff defeat to Ghana.
A repeat of the reverse fixture, when Osimhen’s first-half double sealed a 2-0 victory, would be crucial before Nigeria head to Bloemfontein to face South Africa three days later.
The back-to-back fixtures could ultimately define their path to the 2026 finals in the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
