Atalanta winger Ademola Lookman has voiced his disappointment over the omission of Victor Boniface from the list of nominees for the 2024 African Player of the Year award. Lookman, who has enjoyed a strong season with the Serie A club, believes Boniface’s achievements last season warranted recognition.
Boniface, a key figure in Bayer Leverkusen’s successful campaign in the 2023/24 season, helped the German side claim both the Bundesliga title and the DFB Pokal under coach Xabi Alonso.
The Nigerian striker played a vital role in his team’s success, scoring 21 goals in 34 appearances across all competitions.
His performances were instrumental in Leverkusen’s historic unbeaten league run, a feat that Lookman believes should have earned him a place among the nominees for Africa’s top individual football accolade.
Speaking to Sporty TV, Lookman acknowledged his teammate’s remarkable contributions. “Boniface had a stellar season last year, achieving his personal goals and winning two titles with Leverkusen,” he said.
“They were unbeaten in the league, that’s special. Maybe he could have been nominated, but I’m not the one who makes the rules,” Lookman added, highlighting his belief that Boniface’s accomplishments were deserving of greater recognition.
The absence of Boniface from the prestigious shortlist has sparked debate, with many football fans and experts alike questioning the decision.
While the nominees for the African Player of the Year are typically selected based on individual performances, trophies won, and overall impact, Boniface’s achievements with Leverkusen make a strong case for his inclusion.
As the football world awaits the announcement of the award winner, Lookman’s comments serve as a reminder of the often controversial nature of such decisions.
