Algeria’s Achraf Abada reflects on emotional first national team call-up
Algerian footballer Achraf Abada has described his first call-up to the national team as a dream fulfilled, reflecting on his experience following Algeria’s March training camp.
Speaking after the international window, which included friendly matches against Guatemala and Uruguay, Abada shared his emotions and the journey that led to his selection under coach Vladimir Petković.
“Of course, I hoped to one day join the national team. Thank God, many people helped and supported me,” he said. “I worked hard, I believed in my abilities, and I left the rest in God’s hands.”
The call-up marked a significant milestone in Abada’s career, with the player highlighting the pride it brought to his family.
He revealed that his parents were on Umrah when the news broke, making the moment even more special.
“It was a great source of pride. My parents were on Umrah at the time of the announcement. We spoke on the phone, they encouraged and congratulated me,” he explained.
On the pitch, Abada pointed to a smooth integration into the squad, crediting his teammates for their support.
He emphasised the welcoming environment within the group, which helped him quickly adapt to the demands of international football.
“The integration went very well. All the players gave me a warm welcome, offered advice, and helped me a lot,” he noted.
He also singled out captain Riyad Mahrez for his guidance, describing the experience of playing alongside a player he had long admired.
“He gave me a very warm welcome, encouraged me, and offered advice. Honestly, before, I was just watching him on my screen, and now I’m playing alongside him.”
Deployed in an unfamiliar right-back role, Abada insisted he was prepared to adapt for the team. “I wasn’t surprised, I’ve already played in that position. In the national team, we have to be ready to play wherever the coach needs us.”
Facing Uruguay, he maintained composure against high-level opposition. “I wasn’t afraid. I stayed focused from beginning to end,” he said, before stressing the importance of hard work and belief in achieving success.
“Nothing is easy, but with hard work, concentration, and faith in God, you can achieve your goals.”
Abada concluded by thanking supporters and those close to him, acknowledging their role in his development. “Thank you to the fans who came to the stadium or supported us from afar. God willing, the best is yet to come,” he said, while also expressing gratitude to his club and hometown supporters.
