Former AC Milan goalkeeper Christian Abbiati has urged the club to remain patient with Rafael Leão, arguing that the forward’s match-winning qualities outweigh concerns over his inconsistency.

Leao’s form has come under increasing scrutiny following a campaign marked by fluctuating performances, prompting debate among supporters and pundits over whether Milan should consider cashing in during the summer transfer window.

Despite those concerns, Abbiati has taken a firm stance in defence of the Portugal international, insisting the club would be better served by continuing to build around his talent rather than seeking a replacement.

Speaking to Tuttosport, the former Milan shot-stopper highlighted the unique attributes that make Leao such a difficult player to replace. “He has everything,” Abbiati said, before acknowledging that aspects of the winger’s approach can divide opinion among observers.

“His attitude might bother some, but when I go to San Siro, I see a guy who runs and has quality,” he added, suggesting that perceptions of Leao’s work rate do not always align with what is visible from the stands.

Abbiati also pointed to the unpredictable nature of the 25-year-old’s game as both a strength and a frustration, noting that Leao is capable of deciding matches single-handedly, even if there are moments when his influence appears to wane.

“He’s like that, take it or leave it: he can decide the match, or it might seem like Milan are playing with one less player with him on the pitch,” he said.

Despite those inconsistencies, Abbiati dismissed any suggestion that the forward lacks technical excellence, making clear his belief that Leao remains one of the most naturally gifted players in Milan’s squad. “But you can’t help but say he lacks class.”

Leao remains under contract at Milan until 2028, placing the club in a strong position regarding his immediate future. With no pressing need to sell, the Rossoneri face a strategic decision: whether to persist with a player capable of brilliance on his day or to reshape their attacking options in pursuit of greater consistency.
