AC Milan are pleading with the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) to delay Samuel Chukwueze’s release for Africa Cup of Nations duty until after their January 2nd cup tie with Cagliari, according to reports.
The Serie A giants are eager for winger Chukwueze to feature against the Sardinians before allowing him to join Nigeria’s pre-tournament training camp in Abu Dhabi on January 3rd.
Milan also intend to ask Algeria to postpone midfielder Ismael Bennacer’s departure until after the same San Siro fixture as clubs across Europe wrestle with the impending loss of their African stars.
According to Daily Post Nigeria, Cypriot side Omonia Nicosia have made a similar request regarding Super Eagles goalkeeper Francis Uzoho.
They want the shot-stopper available on January 2nd for a crucial league game against AEL Limassol before permitting him to join Nigeria’s quest for a fourth AFCON title.
It highlights the tensions between clubs and country in the lead-up to major international tournaments.
But Nigeria coach Jose Peseiro will be desperate not to allow his squad’s preparations for Cameroon 2023 to be disrupted at the 11th hour by the game of brinkmanship unfolding in Milan and Nicosia.
