Aboutrika questions Bouaddi’s position after Manchester City defeat

Former Al Ahly and Egypt midfielder Mohamed Aboutrika has questioned Manchester City manager Enzo Maresca’s decision to deploy Morocco international Ayyoub Bouaddi in a more advanced role.

Bouaddi started in an attacking midfield position during City’s 1-0 defeat by Brighton and Hove Albion at the weekend, but struggled to influence the game before being substituted in the 55th minute.

He was replaced by Rayan Cherki as the Cityzens searched for an equaliser.

Speaking as a pundit on beIN Sports MENA after the match, Aboutrika said: “Playing Ayyoub Bouaddi as a number eight or number ten is like playing [Lionel] Messi in goal.

“His position is number six. Why change his positioning?”

Aboutrika believes the 19-year-old’s main strengths are being under-used when he is moved away from the deepest midfield role.

He said Bouaddi’s performances at the 2026 FIFA World Cup demonstrated his ability to win possession, distribute the ball and carry it forward, qualities Aboutrika feels are not being fully utilised in his current position.

Bouaddi has made nine appearances since completing his big-money move to the Etihad Stadium from Ligue 1 side Lille. He has provided two assists during that period.
