Football legend Abedi Ayew Pele has highlighted the critical role of financial education in football, urging the Ghana Football Association (GFA) to share knowledge gained from the FIFA Financial Governance Workshop with local clubs.
Speaking at the closing ceremony of the three-day workshop held at the Marriot Hotel in Accra on Friday, January 31, 2025, Pele reflected on his experiences as a player and investor in the sport.
He encouraged the GFA to disseminate lessons from the workshop to clubs, emphasizing that strong financial management is essential for the development of football.
“It’s a privilege to join hands with you to close this exceptional program. As someone who played football at the highest level, I understand the significance of financial education.
“It is vital for players, clubs, and federations to adopt sound financial practices to sustain the game,” Pele remarked.
The workshop, which ran from January 29 to January 31, brought together representatives from 10 African nations, including Nigeria, Liberia, and Kenya.
Key topics included financial management, accountability, and resource efficiency. Led by Christopher Suppiger, FIFA’s Head of Financial Governance, the program provided tools to improve financial sustainability in football organizations.
Abedi Pele, a Champions League winner with Olympique Marseille, also presented customized sashes and signed jerseys to participants, marking the workshop’s successful conclusion.
