Pirates coach Abdeslam Ouaddou confident about league title chances

A visibly drained Abdeslam Ouaddou has indicated that he will enter discussions over his future after steering Orlando Pirates to a landmark domestic treble, acknowledging that the demands of the campaign have left him mentally and physically depleted despite the triumph.

The Buccaneers restored their place at the pinnacle of South African football on Saturday, clinching the Betway Premiership title with a 2–0 victory over Orbit College.

The contest was decided in unusual fashion, as Sabelo Nkomo and Ndumiso Ngiba turned the ball into their own net to seal the championship in dramatic circumstances.

That victory completed a clean sweep of domestic honours for Pirates, who earlier secured both the MTN8 and Carling Knockout trophies in a season that will be remembered as one of their most commanding in recent years.

Ouaddou’s imprint on a transformed squad

Although the silverware is shared across the entire club structure, Ouaddou’s influence has been central to the transformation of Pirates into a relentless and organised force. His methods have emphasised structure, discipline and unity, producing a side that combined consistency with an aggressive winning mentality.

Several players reached new levels under his leadership. Oswin Appollis emerged as a key performer over the course of the campaign, Relebohile Mofokeng further enhanced his growing reputation as a generational talent, while goalkeeper Sipho Chaine set a new Premier Soccer League benchmark with 21 clean sheets in 30 league outings.

Coach admits exhaustion after demanding campaign

Following the final whistle at Mbombela Stadium, Ouaddou offered an unusually candid reflection on the toll of the season, making clear that his continuation at the club is not yet settled.

“I work with passion. I work with love,” an exhausted Ouaddou stated.

“It’s very difficult to lead such a massive club such as Orlando Pirates. It was a very, very difficult season. I am tired. I am very tired. To be able to steer such a massive ship, you need to be entirely fit. I will sit, think, and discuss with the management as well. I am tired. I am very tired.

“About next season, we will speak about what can happen. I need energy. I need power. Without energy, it will be incredibly difficult to continue down this path. We’ll sit down. I am speaking with pure emotion right now. It was a long season with a massive volume of pressure. We’ll speak and see.”

Uncertain path ahead after historic achievement

If he ultimately steps away, Ouaddou would join a familiar pattern in Pirates’ modern history, where title-winning coaches have often departed shortly after major success.

Ruud Krol left following the 2010/11 treble, while Julio Leal and Augusto Palacios exited after the subsequent treble-winning 2011/12 campaign.

For now, attention shifts from celebration to continuity, as Pirates face the delicate task of managing a coach who has delivered historic success but is openly questioning whether he has the reserves to sustain the intensity required.
