Manchester United defender Aaron Wan-Bissaka has expressed his intention to join the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) national team, ending years of speculation over his international future.
According to Leopards head coach Sébastien Desabre, the 26-year-old right-back personally reached out to confirm his desire to represent the DRC during the upcoming international break in June 2025.
His ambition is to compete in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Morocco and play a pivotal role in the team’s quest for 2026 World Cup qualification.
A long-awaited decision
Born in England to Congolese parents, Wan-Bissaka was eligible to represent both nations but never received a senior call-up for the Three Lions.
With England overlooking him for international duty, pressure from Congolese fans and officials has seemingly influenced his decision to embrace his heritage and commit to the Leopards.
Apology to fans
In his message, Wan-Bissaka extended an apology to the Congolese supporters, acknowledging that his decision could have come sooner.
His statement reflects his dedication to turning the page and contributing to the national team’s success.
A boost for the Leopards
Wan-Bissaka’s potential inclusion would be a major reinforcement for the DRC, a team aiming to establish itself among Africa’s elite.
With his defensive prowess and Premier League experience, he could play a key role in helping the Leopards achieve their ambitions on both the continental and global stage.
While the final formalities remain, anticipation is building for the right-back’s long-awaited debut in Congolese colors.
